A Story of Love.... (if you have a minute or two...) I remember once, back in the 90's.... I was going to videotape my 80+ year old Grandma making her family-famous light bread rolls. She had no recipe, baked in a simple steel stove-top oven, and used no timers.... she talked a blue streak as she kneaded that dough with her old experienced hands. "You gotta feel the salt" she would say. Then she'd start singing quietly as she worked the dough... Old ditty's of her childhood. Her most loved one .... "peanut sitt'n on a railroad track, do'n what he ought'r, 'long came a railroad train.... peanut butter...." I could go on as my memories rekindle... A pinch of this.... A pinch of that.... Everything you needed to know to duplicate that beautiful bread. I waited and kept saying I was going to make that video. That was in 1993. And then, she wasn't there anymore. I didn't take the time to make that video. Grandma's famous light bread rolls... Oh, I can totally SMELL and TASTE my grandmother's fresh, 6 inch high, homemade, light bread rolls right this very minute. With butter on top and hot to the touch! I remember when she'd offer me one of those hot rolls with a glass of fresh cold milk and mom would walk in. She would say no of course, but Grandma just smiled and it didn't take long to convince Mom that it was okay for her to spoil me. And she did. Always smiling, telling stories and making me feel good. I remember that story every time I visit the old homestead. I smell those very same rolls... Why didn't I do that video? And why didn't she ever have a good portrait made with Grandpa? Memories. So many of us never gives them a thought until...... well, until that's all we have! Very sad. Update: When I last edited this story, the rest of this story read... " I still have Dad! Dad's 89 and surprisingly, going strong living in his home with loving care from my younger brother. He lives through photos and thoughts of Mom now. And of course, Fox News!! We get together more often now and enjoy going through the portraits and the old snapshots together. His mind is still sharp but he moves kind of slow these days and more and more, he's nostalgic for 'the way it was' as he would say, something he has never shown an interest in..... ". That was two years ago. In December of 2010, Dad left us. Mom, Dad, my brother Jeff.... & everyone before them are all gone as well. Now, it's all in my head and among the few old photographs that Dad had stored away. This is an emotional issue for me folks. I just can't imagine what it would be like without pictures. Pictures and video. To remember with vivid clarity, my parents and their parents as young productive people with youthful spirit and having fun "back in the day". To see old home movies of my father with mom, young and loving together, my dad with his dad... my crazy cousins, my Aunts & Uncles.... and photos. Lots of photographs! Wow! Time has simply flown by for me and I have daily thoughts about family life and memories more and more. You probably don't have those thoughts yet. You're most likely quite young.
